Sofia Coppola, director of the motion picture
Marie Antoinette, worked with Oscar-winning
costume designer Milena Canonero to concoct
a candy-colored palette inspired by the pink and
pale-green macaroons she came across at Paris'
Laduree bakery. "I didn't want to reference
paintings that have faded over the years,"
Coppola says. "I wanted the brightness of the
colors in the film to be about what it felt like
to be alive as opposed to taking some kind of
distant, sepia-toned look at history."
