Court dress in Marie-Antoinette's day was characterized by the pannier or hooped skirt frame. This had been popular in the court of Louis XIV but had fallen in and out of favor. Marie Antoinette reintroduced it and gave it a new shape: it now extended widely at the sides but was as straight as possible in front and at the back. The hoops were also hinged so that they could be raised or lowered. The Queen, who was a frequent buyer of Rose Bertin, adored her wardrobe and was passionate about every detail.
